I didn't know what I needed — just that I needed something engraved for our panels. Recognition Products walked me through the options, recommended the right material for the application, and had proofs back the same day.

Custom engraved placards for any industrial or commercial application.

An engraved placard is a permanent identification or warning sign with the marking cut into the material rather than printed on top of it. Because the marking is cut into the material, there is no printed surface layer to fade, peel, or delaminate. The category covers electrical panel identification, arc flash warnings, solar rapid shutdown, valve identification, equipment nameplates and data plates, warning signs, dedication plaques, and custom one-off work.

We manufacture every category of engraved placard on dedicated in-house fiber laser and CO2 laser platforms. Four substrates — brass, aluminum, stainless steel, and two-ply engravable laminate — matched to the environment, mounting method, and compliance requirement at the quote stage.

Not sure which type of placard fits your application? That's normal — most buyers know they need "a placard" without knowing whether it's technically an arc flash label, an equipment nameplate, or a solar rapid shutdown placard. Send us a photo of what you're identifying, a description of the environment, and any code or facility requirement, and we'll spec it and quote it. If it turns out to be a specific compliance category, we route to the right product; if it's custom or one-off, we build to your specification.

Categories of engraved placards

Six categories cover most engraved placard work.

Most engraved placard requirements fall into one of five compliance-driven categories plus a sixth catch-all for custom and one-off work. Each of the specific categories has its own detail page with code references, format specifications, and material recommendations — click through to the one that fits your application, or use the catch-all card for anything that doesn't.

Materials we engrave

Four substrates, one shop. Every placard engraved in-house.

We run dedicated fiber laser and CO2 laser platforms in-house. Fiber laser marks brass, aluminum, and stainless steel; CO2 laser engraves two-ply engravable laminate. Four substrates matched to your application, environment, compliance requirement, and budget at the quote stage.

Stainless steel — harsh environments
Laser-bonded marking on stainless for chemical wash-down, outdoor exposure, marine, food-processing, and other environments where laminate and anodized aluminum don't survive. Fiber laser marked in-house.

Frequently asked

Common questions on custom engraved placards.

What is an engraved placard?
An engraved placard is a permanent identification or warning sign where the marking is cut into the material rather than printed on top of it. Because the marking is the material itself, there is no surface layer to fade, peel, or delaminate. The category covers electrical panel identification, arc flash warnings, solar rapid shutdown signs, equipment nameplates, valve identification tags, dedication plaques, warning placards, and custom one-off work.
What's the difference between a placard, a label, a tag, a sign, and a nameplate?
In industrial usage the terms overlap significantly and buyers use whatever their facility calls it. Generally: placards and signs are larger identification or warning items mounted to equipment or walls; labels are smaller identification items often applied to panels or components; tags are typically smaller, sometimes hanging, and often used for valves or asset tracking; nameplates are equipment ID plates carrying manufacturer data. We make all of them and don't care what you call it — send us a description or photo and we'll build it.
I'm not sure what type of placard I need — can you help me spec it?
Yes — that's what most first calls are. Send us a photo of what you're identifying, a description of the environment (indoor, outdoor, chemical exposure, wash-down), any code or facility standard you're working to, and how you plan to mount it. We recommend material, size, mounting method, and layout, then send a proof for your approval before anything ships. Reorders match the approved layout already on file. All calls answered live, Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM PT.
What materials can you engrave placards in?
Four substrates in-house: two-ply engravable laminate (28 color combinations in stock), brass (permanent installations, valve tags, dedications), anodized aluminum (equipment nameplates, asset tags, multi-site programs), and stainless steel (chemical wash-down, marine, food-processing, harsh environments). Fiber laser handles the metals; CO2 laser handles engravable laminate. All engraved in Chico.
Do you make electrical panel placards, arc flash placards, and solar placards?
Yes — each has its own detail page with code references and format specifications. See electrical panel labels, arc flash labels, and engraved solar placards. If you're not sure which applies, describe the application and we'll route to the right product.
Do you make equipment nameplates and asset tags?
Yes — see the asset & equipment tags page. Sequential numbering, barcodes, tamper-evident options, and anodized aluminum with data field layouts for voltage, model, serial, and capacity. Multi-site industrial asset tag programs are a specialty.
Can you engrave custom shapes and sizes?
Yes. Custom shapes, custom sizes, custom hole patterns, and custom die-cuts on both engravable laminate and metal. Send us a sketch, a DXF file, or a sample of what you're matching. Standard rectangular formats ship faster; custom shapes add proof and production time depending on complexity.
Can you match my facility's existing placard format?
Yes. Send us a photo, sample placard, or your facility standard document. We match substrate, dimensions, color, font, mounting method, layout, and any logo requirements. Once your standard is on file, every reorder matches exactly — across sites and over years. Standard workflow for corporate, healthcare, education, and government facility programs.
What's the minimum order?
One. Order a single placard for one panel, one machine, or one door — that's fine. Quantity discounts kick in on larger runs. Facility-wide rollouts and multi-site programs are set up for consolidated turnaround at higher volumes.
What's the lead time and how do I order?
Standard turnaround is 24–48 hours from proof approval. Same-day rush is available for time-critical work. Faster on request when it's a real emergency — call and ask. To order, send us a description or photo of what you need, your preferred material and mounting method (or ask us to recommend), and any facility standard or code requirement. We come back with pricing and a proof for your approval before anything ships. Reorders match the approved layout already on file. All calls answered live, Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM PT.
