NEC 2026 § 110.16 expanded arc-flash marking. Engraved to your spec.

NEC 2026 § 110.16 — renamed "Arc-Flash Hazard Marking" — expanded detailed marking requirements for service equipment and feeder-supplied equipment in non-dwelling occupancies where energized examination, adjustment, servicing, or maintenance is required. The 2023 edition's ≥1000A amperage threshold is gone. Labels must warn effectively, be permanently affixed, and have sufficient durability to withstand the environment involved. NFPA 70E-2024 § 130.5(H) added a matching durability requirement on the workplace-safety side.

NEC 2026 § 110.16 removed the amperage threshold that previously limited detailed arc flash marking to service and feeder-supplied equipment rated ≥1000A. Detailed marking now applies across the covered equipment types below, in non-dwelling occupancies where energized examination, adjustment, servicing, or maintenance is required.

NFPA 70E-2024 § 130.5(H) added an explicit durability requirement: the label shall be of sufficient durability to withstand the environment involved. NFPA 70E is a workplace electrical-safety standard, and its adopted legal status varies by jurisdiction. For humid mechanical rooms, outdoor switchyards, chemical processing facilities, and other harsh installation environments, engraved two-ply phenolic is one durable substrate choice — matched to the actual environment at the quote stage rather than defaulted to.

What material do you use for arc flash plates?
Two-ply engravable laminate. A colored cap layer over a contrasting core, engraved so the signal word and hazard data appear in the core color. What's changing in NEC 2026 for arc flash labels?
NEC 2026 § 110.16 was renamed "Arc-Flash Hazard Marking" and expanded its scope. Under previous editions, detailed arc flash marking was required on service and feeder-supplied equipment rated ≥1200A (2020) or ≥1000A (2023). NEC 2026 removes that amperage threshold — detailed marking now applies to covered service and feeder-supplied equipment in non-dwelling occupancies where energized examination, adjustment, servicing, or maintenance is required. NEC 2026 became available for state adoption in September 2025; enforcement timing varies by jurisdiction.
Can I use vinyl adhesive arc flash labels?
Yes, provided the material meets NEC § 110.21(B) durability requirements — adequately warns of the hazard, is permanently affixed and not handwritten, and has sufficient durability to withstand the environment involved. High-grade UV-rated polyester or vinyl labels can meet that requirement when matched to the installation environment. NFPA 70E-2024 § 130.5(H) added an explicit durability requirement of its own on the workplace-safety side. AHJs have discretion to determine suitability for the installation. We manufacture engraved plates as one durable option — matched to your spec, drawings, and adopted code edition.
What information goes on an arc flash label?
Per NFPA 70E § 130.5(H), the minimum content includes: nominal system voltage, arc-flash boundary, and one of the following — incident energy and corresponding working distance, minimum arc rating of required clothing, site-specific level of PPE, or highest hazard/risk category. Many facilities also include the assessment date, equipment ID, shock protection boundaries, and site-specific PPE data. We engrave whatever your electrical engineer's arc flash study specifies — we don't calculate incident energy or determine required PPE ourselves.
Do you calculate the incident energy for me?
No. Incident energy calculation requires a full arc flash study performed by a qualified electrical engineer using IEEE 1584-2018 methodology or the NFPA 70E PPE category method. That study produces the values that go on the label. We're a manufacturer — we engrave the plates to the specifications your study provides. If you need referrals for arc flash engineering services, ask when you call.
How often should arc flash labels be reviewed?
NFPA 70E requires labels be reviewed at least every 5 years to confirm the underlying data remains accurate. They should be updated sooner after any system change affecting fault current or protective device clearing time — utility transformer changes, feeder or source reconfiguration, protective relay setting changes, new equipment installation, or after a fault event. When you order updated plates, we can match the existing legend format and mounting method exactly.
