"Electrical panel label" means different things to different buyers. Most products sold under that name are printed adhesive stickers — fine for temporary marking, but ink fades, adhesive fails, and NEC 408.4(B) prohibits handwritten identification and requires durability. We don't make stickers. We engrave two-ply phenolic plates.

The identification is cut into the material rather than printed on top of it. That construction is what puts our plates on PG&E service panels, hospital electrical rooms, and the switchgear our contractor customers install every week. Engraved electrical panel labels are made from two-ply engravable laminate — a colored cap layer over a contrasting core, so the legend appears where the cap is cut away. We stock 28 color combinations, including the ANSI Z535.4 signal colors used for DANGER, WARNING and CAUTION plates, with PMS matching on custom orders.

Every circuit shall be legibly identified as to its clear, evident, and specific purpose or use. Engraved directories satisfy legibility without depending on handwritten entries.

§ 110.16 — Arc-flash hazard marking
2023 § 110.16(B) dropped the threshold from ≥1200A to ≥1000A on covered service and feeder-supplied equipment. 2026 removed the amperage threshold for detailed marking on service and feeder-supplied equipment in non-dwelling occupancies where energized examination or maintenance is required.

What material do you use for panel labels?
Two-ply engravable laminate. A colored cap layer is bonded over a contrasting core, engraved so the legend appears in the core color. We stock 28 different color combinations and can custom-source PMS matches for facility programs. The identification is cut into the material, not printed on the surface.
What's the difference between engraved plates and printed labels?
Printed adhesive labels rely on ink or toner sitting on top of a substrate — UV, chemicals, heat, and cleaning cycles all degrade them over time, and adhesive fails. Engraved two-ply phenolic has the identification cut into the material rather than printed on top of it. NEC 408.4(B) prohibits handwritten circuit identification and requires durability, and engraved plates satisfy that requirement without depending on adhesive or ink. That's why buyers, inspectors, and AHJs specify engraved plates for permanent panel identification.
Do your circuit directory labels meet NEC 408.4?
Engraved two-ply phenolic meets the NEC 408.4(A) legibility requirement and the NEC 408.4(B) durability requirement, including the prohibition on handwritten identification. Compliance certification for the installed equipment remains the equipment owner's responsibility — we manufacture the label to your spec.
