NEC 690.12(D) requires two distinct labels on every solar PV system with rapid shutdown: a building placard at the service equipment identifying the presence of the PV system and rapid shutdown, and a switch label at the rapid shutdown initiation device. Both must be permanent, durable, and meet the format requirements of the adopted NEC edition. We produce both label types — engraved, not printed.

The identification is cut into the two-ply engravable laminate rather than printed on top of an adhesive substrate — the substrate carries the identification.

Signal Red is the primary color for NEC 690.12(D) rapid shutdown placards, with Signal Orange and Signal Yellow available for warning and caution formats. Material choice matches your AHJ's requirements and the installation environment.

304 or 316 stainless with laser-bonded marking. Well suited for coastal installs, marine environments, and utility service equipment where chloride exposure is a concern. Fiber laser processed in-house.

Can I use printed adhesive labels for rapid shutdown instead?
Yes, printed adhesive labels can meet applicable code requirements when the substrate is matched to the installation environment. Engraved two-ply laminate is one durable option — the identification is cut into the substrate rather than printed on top of an adhesive backing — which provides a specific durability profile for outdoor service equipment exposed to UV, temperature swings, and weather. AHJs across our referral network accept engraved placards as meeting NEC 690.12(D) durability requirements. Both options have appropriate use cases; we manufacture the engraved option.
What text is required on the rapid shutdown placard?
NEC 690.12(D) text and format requirements vary by adopted NEC edition and jurisdiction. The 2020 and 2023 editions specify the placard text, layout, and color requirements. Some AHJs require additional information beyond code minimum — array boundaries, roof schematics, or facility-specific hazard identification. Send us your AHJ's specification or the exact format your installer standard calls for; we engrave to that spec. We don't determine what text your specific AHJ requires.
