The material

Two-ply engravable laminate. Built for identification that has to last.

"Phenolic" is a commonly used buyer and engraving-trade term for rigid two-ply and three-ply engravable identification stock. Many products sold for this application today are acrylic-, ABS-, or other polymer-based engraving laminates rather than traditional phenolic resin. We verify the actual substrate and performance specifications for the material selected on every job.

The contrasting image is engraved through the cap layer rather than surface-printed. That construction provides strong resistance to ordinary abrasion. Overall service life depends on the substrate grade, mounting method, UV exposure, chemicals, temperature, and installation environment — which is why we match the material to the application at the quote stage rather than defaulting to one stock item.

2023 § 110.16(B) dropped the threshold from ≥1200A to ≥1000A on covered service and feeder-supplied equipment. 2026 removed the amperage threshold for detailed marking on service and feeder-supplied equipment in non-dwelling occupancies where energized examination or maintenance is required.

What is phenolic material, and why is it used for industrial tags?
"Phenolic" is a commonly used buyer and engraving-trade term for rigid two-ply and three-ply engravable identification stock. A colored cap layer is bonded over a contrasting core — many products sold for this application today are acrylic-, ABS-, or other polymer-based engraving laminates rather than traditional phenolic resin. When we engrave, the cap is removed to expose the core, so the identification becomes part of the material rather than sitting on the surface. That construction is why buyers, inspectors, and AHJs have specified "phenolic" for panel labels, valve tags, and industrial identification for decades.
How is engraved phenolic different from printed or adhesive labels?
Printed labels rely on ink or toner sitting on top of a substrate — UV, chemicals, heat, and cleaning cycles all degrade them over time. Engraved laminate has the image cut into the material rather than printed on the surface, which provides strong resistance to ordinary abrasion. Overall service life depends on the substrate grade, mounting method, UV exposure, chemicals, temperature, and installation environment. We match the material to your spec at the quote stage.
How many colors do you stock?
We stock 28 different two-ply engravable laminate color combinations — including all ANSI safety colors (Signal Red, Signal Orange, Signal Yellow) and standard identification colors (black, white, red, blue, green, brown, yellow). For branded facility programs we also offer PMS color match on custom orders — sourced to your color standard, engraved to your drawing.
Are your labels flame-rated?
Selected engraving laminates are available with manufacturer-published UL 94 classifications, including V-0 or HB at specified tested thicknesses. UL 94 is a material classification, not a UL Listing of the finished label. Availability and rating must be verified for the exact product, color, and thickness ordered. Tell us your specification and we'll match the material.
Can you match my facility's existing panel labels?
Yes. Send a photo, a sample, or your existing template. We match color, layout, font, and mounting method so the new labels integrate cleanly with what's already installed. Standard workflow: proof or mockup for your approval before we engrave anything.
Do you handle multi-site or multi-location programs?
That's a specialty. Standardized templates, per-site variable data, consolidated billing, and consistent turnaround across every location. Currently supporting national and regional programs for utilities, contractors, and franchise operators.
What's the minimum order?
One. Order a single label if that's what you need. Quantity discounts kick in on larger runs.
How fast can I get labels?
Standard turnaround is 24–48 hours from proof approval. Same-day rush is available for time-critical work. Faster on request when it's a real emergency — call and ask.
Do you offer samples?
Yes. Physical material samples available on request so you can see color, thickness, and engraving quality before you commit. Standard workflow on new orders is proof or mockup approval before production. Reorders match the approved layout already on file.
Which NEC and NFPA 70E editions do you work to?
We manufacture to the code edition, drawing, or specification you supply. Commonly requested editions include NEC 2023, NFPA 70E-2024, ANSI Z535.4-2023, and ASME A13.1-2023. Prior editions still in force in many jurisdictions include NEC 2020, NEC 2017, and NFPA 70E-2021. Applicable edition depends on your jurisdiction, facility, contract, and specification.
