What is magnetic backing

Magnetic backing. No holes, no snags.

Magnetic backing is the most common choice for tags worn every day. Nothing pierces the fabric, so uniforms and dress shirts don’t collect pin holes, snags, or loose threads. The garment stays in service.

It also goes on and off faster than a pin — on at the start of a shift, off at the end.

Available on any name tag or badge we make: engraved plastic, engraved metal, or full color.

Not used by wearers with a pacemaker. Pin, bulldog clip, or military clutch backing is used instead.

HEAVY DUTY — STANDARD Standard 3-button magnets. Holds on polos, blouses, thin jackets, and blazers.

Pacemaker safety Magnetic backing is not worn by people with a pacemaker.

Heavy duty magnets hold through standard uniform fabric without a pinhole.
Tailored clothing
Blazers and sport coats
Magnetic backing is chosen where a pin would mark a tailored garment.

Heavier fabric
Jackets and outerwear
Extreme duty magnets, available on request, hold on thicker outerwear material.
Front-of-house teams

Magnetic backing is common where a consistent, undamaged uniform appearance is specified.
Team programs
Multi-location and franchise rosters
One backing standard can be specified across every location on a program, with individual wearer preference confirmed on the proof.

Frequently asked

Magnetic name tags, answered.

What is magnetic backing, and why do teams choose it over pin?
Magnetic backing holds the tag against the garment using a magnet built into the tag, without a pin passing through the fabric. It is chosen for uniforms and tailored clothing where a pinhole is not wanted, and is generally easier to put on than a pin back.
What's the difference between heavy duty and extreme duty magnets?
Heavy duty is the standard 3-button magnet and holds on polos, blouses, thin jackets, and blazers. Extreme duty is available on request for thicker material such as a heavy jacket.
Is magnetic backing available on every name tag or badge?
Yes. Magnetic is a backing, not a material, so it is available on any name tag or badge we make, including engraved plastic, engraved metal, and full color.
Can backing be mixed within one team order?
Yes. Magnetic, pin, bulldog clip, and military clutch can be mixed on a single roster order, by individual wearer preference.
Is magnetic backing safe for everyone to wear?
Magnetic backing is not worn by people with a pacemaker. Pin, bulldog clip, or military clutch backing is used instead for that wearer.
How do I order magnetic name tags for a team?
Send a spreadsheet or list of names and titles, along with each wearer's backing preference. One template is approved, the full roster is laid out to it, and a proof showing the complete set is sent before production. Later reorders match that approved template without another proof. See general ordering details →
Can I reorder or replace a single magnetic tag later?
Yes. The approved layout, material, magnet strength, and backing are kept on file, so a single replacement tag matches the original run.
Are magnetic name badges the same product as magnetic name tags?
Yes. The terms are used interchangeably for the same product. This page covers magnetic backing for both name tags and name badges, across every material we make.
What backing is used if I don't specify one?
Heavy duty, the standard 3-button magnet, is used unless extreme duty is requested for heavier material.
Is it "name tag" or "nametag"?
Both spellings refer to the same product. "Name tag," as two words, is the more common form.
